TestFlight Feedback vs App Store Reviews: What to Use When

TestFlight feedback is for deciding whether a specific beta build is ready to ship. App Store reviews are public, post-release feedback that can reveal production problems and may need a developer response. Keep the source queues separate, but route verified findings from both into the same product backlog so one issue doesn’t become two competing tasks.
The practical split is:
- Use TestFlight feedback to diagnose screenshots, comments, and crashes against a version and build before release.
- Use App Store reviews to monitor what customers experience in the public version, decide whether to respond, and identify evidence for fixes or future work.
- Preserve the source, version or build, visibility, and next action when either signal becomes a task.

Apple’s tester feedback guide says TestFlight feedback can include screenshots, crash-related comments, and general comments. Developers can filter it by platform, app version, build group, build, OS version, or device. The detailed view can also include tester, app, and device information.
Apple’s ratings and reviews overview describes a different channel: ratings and written customer reviews on the App Store. Reviews and developer responses are public, and a customer can update a review after receiving a response.
Use TestFlight feedback to make a release decision
TestFlight feedback is strongest when the question includes a build:
Does this problem still happen in the release candidate, and should it stop submission?
A screenshot from build 82 does not automatically block build 84. First check the version and build shown in the detailed feedback view, then establish whether a later beta already changed the affected flow.
Route each useful beta item into one of four decisions:
- Current-release blocker: A reproducible crash, data-loss risk, broken purchase path, or failed core flow in the candidate build.
- Current-release task: A fix or clarification that belongs in this version but does not stop all testing.
- Later backlog evidence: A real usability issue or feature need that should not expand the current scope.
- No action: A duplicate, an issue fixed in a later build, expected behavior, or a report without enough evidence to act.
Do not mistake diagnostic detail for certainty. Device, OS, uptime, connection type, and free disk space can help form a test, but they don’t prove a root cause. Apple’s reference lists the available beta tester feedback fields; use them as observations, not conclusions.

Use App Store reviews for public-version follow-up
An App Store review answers a different question:
What did a customer experience in the released app, and is there a useful public or product action?
Read the review with its rating, country or region, date, and app version when available. App Store Connect can filter individual reviews by version, rating, and whether they were edited or answered, according to Apple’s review viewing instructions.
Then make two decisions separately:
- Customer-queue decision: Reply now, investigate before replying, report a concern, or close without a public action.
- Product decision: Add evidence to an existing task, create an investigation, create a future candidate, or create nothing.
A reply is not a fix, and a task is not a response. If a customer reports a sync failure, a public reply may acknowledge the report and direct them to a support channel where private details won’t be exposed. The product task should instead describe the observed failure, affected version, evidence, reproduction step, and completion condition.

Route both sources without merging them into one inbox

Pooling raw feedback too early loses information. A public review may need a visible response. A TestFlight report may contain tester or device details that do not belong in a public reply. The same symptom may appear in both places, but that does not make it two product requirements.

The Product task field is the deduplication point. Search for an existing issue before creating another one, then attach the new source as evidence. Keep each source action independent: resolving a bug does not publish a review response, and replying to a review does not verify a fix.

This matrix intentionally avoids automatic conversion. Feedback is evidence; it is not a ready-made requirement.
Worked example: one sync problem in both channels
Suppose a tester on build 83 submits a screenshot and says a new project remains stuck on “Syncing.”

Build 84 passes the reproduction check, so the blocker is closed and version 3.2 ships. Three days later, an App Store review for version 3.2 describes the same visible symptom.
Do not create SYNC-43 from the review. Reopen or update SYNC-42 with the production evidence, confirm the customer is actually on the fixed public build, and test the states that differed from beta. The review also gets its own customer-queue status:

The two reports are not interchangeable. The TestFlight item evaluated build 83 before release. The review reports a public experience after release. They converge on one technical investigation while retaining different follow-up obligations.
