Record counterevidence as carefully as supporting evidence. If three people describe three unrelated problems, don’t summarize that as “everyone struggles with this space.” The disagreement may mean the audience is too broad.
Choose risk before convenience
Convenience can point you toward the wrong test. A technical spike may feel objective because it involves writing code, even when the biggest uncertainty is whether anyone cares. Start with the assumption that could kill the idea.
Examples:
- If access to users is uncertain, recruit interviews before designing screens.
- If people report pain but never change behavior, test commitment before building.
- If the core interaction may be technically impossible, run a disposable spike.
- If several strong alternatives exist, test why a narrow segment would switch.
Step 3: Research behavior and alternatives
Desk research can’t validate demand by itself, but it can improve the questions you ask.
Search the App Store using the words a customer would use, not just your proposed category. For each credible alternative, record:
- The audience and use case named on its product page
- The core workflow and pricing model
- Use cases or capabilities the product page does not claim to handle
- Recent review language that describes a situation or failed outcome
- Whether the product is maintained and available to your target audience
Treat reviews as leads, not verdicts. A complaint can reveal language and a possible gap, but you don’t know whether it is representative, whether the reviewer would switch, or whether the requested solution is viable.
Also examine non-app alternatives. A spreadsheet, paper form, calendar reminder, group chat, or paid service may be the real incumbent. No competing app doesn’t mean no competition; it can mean the current workaround is already good enough.
End this pass with questions, not a copied feature matrix:

What do they do immediately afterward?

Step 4: Interview without selling
Recruit people who fit the audience and have encountered the situation recently. Friends can participate if they genuinely qualify. Encouragement from anyone who doesn’t qualify isn’t evidence of demand among the people you’re trying to serve.
Ask about a real past event:
- “Tell me about the last time this happened.”
- “What triggered it?”
- “What did you do next?”
- “What was the hardest part?”
- “What have you tried?”
- “Did you pay for anything or ask anyone for help?”
- “What happened when you left it unresolved?”

After each interview, separate observation from interpretation:
Observed: The participant described checking three sources during last week's task.

Choose the lightest test that produces behavior relevant to your riskiest assumption. Each experiment answers a different question:

Define the decision rule before seeing results:
Assumption: Freelance pet sitters lose critical handoff details between visits.
Experiment: Manually produce one structured handoff for qualified participants.
Signal: They provide real visit details and use the handoff in the next visit.
Build rule: Repeated use reveals one common, narrow workflow worth automating.
Wait rule: The problem is real, but access or timing prevents a fair test.
Reject rule: Participants don't use the handoff or prefer their current process.
This example doesn’t prescribe a universal response count or conversion rate. A niche professional tool and a consumer utility require different kinds of evidence. Judge the result against the adoption, cost, and reach your own app would need.
Use TestFlight at the right stage

Behavior test
