Pick the kind of developer task you’re tracking
“Developer task” describes several kinds of work. A useful buying decision starts by naming the information you need and the decision you expect to make after checking it.

Treat the menu bar as a status surface
Apple describes the Mac menu bar as a place to choose commands, perform tasks, and check status. Its design guidance says a menu bar extra exposes app-specific functionality even when that app isn’t frontmost.
That makes the menu bar well suited to a short loop:

Keep backlog grooming, long notes, dependency mapping, and release retrospectives in a full window. The menu bar works best when it presents a compact status or a short set of actions, then hands detailed work to the appropriate context.
Apple also warns developers not to rely on a menu bar extra always being visible. macOS can hide extras when space is limited, and people can choose what appears. Treat the menu as convenient access, not the only place where important task state exists.
How to compare Mac menu bar task trackers for developers
1. Check what each status means
Labels such as “3 left” or “60%” need a denominator. Three tasks left in which project? Does 60% count a release checklist, development tasks, or both?
A good tracker keeps enough context next to the number to prevent a wrong decision. For release work, that usually means the app, version, task count, progress, and due date. For coding sessions, it might mean the repository, session state, and last activity.
2. Verify that the status is current
A convenient stale number is worse than opening the source. During a trial, change one task in the main app and check when the menu reflects it. Then make a change on another device, if sync is part of the product, and repeat the check.
If the tool doesn’t document a refresh interval, don’t assume one. Test the installed version under your normal conditions and confirm important state in its system of record before acting on it.
3. Test where a click takes you
The menu should shorten navigation, not create a second place to search. After noticing a blocked release, you should be able to reach the app or release context where the details live. After noticing a finished coding session, you should be able to return to that session.
Count the handoff, not just the glance. A menu that saves one window switch but adds three clicks isn’t doing much.
4. Match the scope to your system of record
Ask where task changes are supposed to happen:
- A team using GitHub Issues or another shared tracker usually needs that system to remain authoritative.
- A developer supervising concurrent coding agents needs session state from those tools.

Avoid a tracker that silently creates a second, incompatible backlog. If two systems must coexist, give each one a boundary. For example, code defects can remain in the team issue tracker while App Store screenshots, review notes, and release checks live in the release plan.
5. Review access, storage, and platform requirements
A compact interface can still request broad data access. An issue client may need repository permissions. A reminders utility needs access to your reminders. A session monitor may inspect local process or session files. Read the current documentation and inspect the permissions requested by the installed build.
Decide whether you need local-only storage, iCloud sync, a hosted account, or team sharing. These aren’t interchangeable benefits. A local-only tracker can suit one Mac but fail a cross-device workflow; private personal sync doesn’t create shared ownership for a team.
Also verify the supported macOS version and distribution method. If a tool comes from outside the Mac App Store, check its signing or notarization status and review the project’s installation instructions before bypassing a macOS warning.
6. Look for clear empty and error states
Test empty, offline, and ambiguous states. What happens when no next release exists, two apps have similar names, sync hasn’t completed, or a due date is missing?
The tracker should show uncertainty instead of converting it into “all done.” A blank menu isn’t evidence that the release is ready.
Run a ten-minute trial before committing
Use the same small test for each candidate instead of browsing screenshots and marketing copy.
- Use real work. Choose one current project, session, or release rather than a sample workspace.
- Add three distinguishable tasks. Include one complete task, one incomplete task, and one task with a due date or blocker.
- Check the closed state. Can you learn anything useful before opening the menu?
- Check the open state. Can you identify the project and the remaining work in a few seconds?
- Change one task at the source. Verify that the menu reaches the correct state.
- Test the handoff. Open the detailed context and count the interactions.
- Create an ambiguous state. Add another project with a similar name or another active release.
- Test missing information. Archive the test item or remove its due date and inspect the result.
- Restart the app or Mac. Confirm the tracker returns without losing or duplicating context.
- Write one sentence about its job. If the sentence contains several unrelated jobs, the tool may be too broad for menu-bar use.
